The Story Of Partnerships Building Safer Communities

By Daisy Jenkins, PCSO Supervisor, Hertfordshire Police

Hi, my name is Daisy Jenkins; I was previously a Youth Violent Crime Police Community Support Officer based at Watford Police Station before recently progressing to a Supervisor.

The main objective of my role is to divert youths away from a life of crime; I do this through engagement and by taking time to build relationships with them. Prevention is key.

When I first started my role, I chose to explore the Watford area to look for possible diversionary activities for these young people to participate in. I attended the Meriden Community Centre and met the Watford FC Trust staff who made me feel welcome straight away. When I visited the centre, we spoke about the different activities the Trust deliver such as the Kicks programme. This gave me a pathway opportunity; to be able to refer young people who had an interest in football/multi sports. The impact these programmes have on the youths in the area is immeasurable, it gives them a safe space, a purpose and a support network.

The partnership working between myself, and the Trust is solid. I am a point of contact for them if they ever have any concerns about youths who are due to attend their projects and they are always available to assist me with any outstanding enquiries.

Last year I proposed an engagement event with the Trust whereby they gave me a huge amount of support to organise and deliver an Educational Football tournament at Watford FC training ground. The day began with an input from an inspirational guest speaker who spoke a true story about the consequences of knife crime and then broke out into a football tournament involving around 120 young people. This day allowed police to break down barriers with young people and show that they are a bridge and not a barrier. The day was a huge success, and I am hopeful that more partnership events will take place in the future.

My positive and ever-growing relationship with the Trust has also allowed me to become a casual coach for the organisation on the side of my full-time role with Hertfordshire Police.
